Around the Rim: Heat have huge half, Magic rolling
A quick recap of Tuesday’s games in the NBA.
Heat 120 Spurs 98: Dwayne Wade was once again in street clothes on the bench, watching his teammates get schooled and trailing by as much as 17 points. But it looked like a whole new Miami team took the court in the second half as they went on a tear, led by an energized Lebron James as the Heat outscored the Spurs 39-12 in the third quarter and they never let off the gas. Miami shot 68% in the second half and outscored San Antonio 71-35 for a crushing victory. Afterwards, Gregg Popovich said his team “should be embarrassed”.
Lebron finished with 33 points and 10 assists while Chris Bosh had 30. While the Spurs have played well with Manu Ginobili, they still haven’t found a way to win on the road. Tim Duncan only had eight points while Daniel Green had 20 off the bench.
Bulls 118 Suns 97: Derrick Rose sat out with his bad toe and the Bulls didn’t miss a beat. They put up 67 points in the first half including Carlos Boozer scoring 24 of his 31 points and Chicago didn’t look bad with a 20 point lead at the half. The Suns shot well but couldn’t keep up with the Bulls. CJ Watson went for 23 in the start for Rose. The Suns are really struggling, having now lost five straight. Steve Nash had 25 in the loss.
Magic 96 Bobcats 89: At this pace, why should the Magic not play out the season with Dwight Howard? The big man had 25 points and 17 rebounds, leading Orlando to their fifth straight win. The Bobcats kept it close before Ryan Anderson hit a three with 1:33 to make it a five point lead and put it away. The Magic are look as good as almost anyone in the league so far this season. Gerald Henderson led Charlotte with 22.
Jazz 108 Clippers 79: It’s time to stop calling them the ‘surprising’ Utah Jazz after a blowout win against the Clippers and are now 9-4 on the season. Paul Millsap had 20 points and C.J. Miles came off the bench for 19 while they ran and dunked all over Lob City who were held to under 37% shooting. Chris Paul is still out with a sore hamstring for the Clippers and no one scored more than Caron Butler and his 14.
Warriors 105 Cavaliers 95: Good news for the Warriors was the win. But there was also bad news as Monta Ellis got cracked in the nose accidentally by Anderson Varejao in the final minute that left him bloodied. After the game, he was checked by doctors and does not have a broken nose but it did not look good as he laid in a pile on the court. Ellis didn’t have a good night shooting either but David Lee went wild, hitting on 13-of-20 shots for 29 points. Golden State had just a one point lead going into the fourth quarter where they held the Cavs to just 16 points. Kyrie Irving had 18 points and eight assists.
Rockets 97 Pistons 80: Sloppy game for both teams with the Pistons turning the ball over 18 times while the Rockets had 20 turnovers. But Houston was much more efficient on offense with a balanced scoring attack that had six players in double-digits including 14 from both Luis Scola and Samuel Dalembert. Tayhsaun Prince had 20 points while Greg Monroe had an off night with just four points and 11 rebounds.
Nuggets 105 Bucks 95: Brandon Jennings had 12 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback. The Nuggets offense was rolling again, getting 51 points off the bench including 22 from Corey Brewer.
